Founded in 1927 the Effingham House estate was used to form what we see today, with the main house being used as the clubhouse and the surrounding gardens and farmland being turned into the course. The course itself was originally designed by Harry Shapland Colt, a celebrated course designer who was commissioned for the project, doing such a fantastic job that Robert HK Brown in the June 1931 issue of Golfing called the course a “Surrey woodland paradise.” And at 5,931 metres in length, it was the second longest in Surrey at the time. With views towards the London skyline, the course comprises two loops of nine holes, nestled on the edge of the North Downs.
Renowned as England’s finest downland course, Effingham Golf Course is a top 100 championship course, hosting major golf events. More recently the club has undergone major renovation and upgrades to its classic course and club facilities, adding a new pro shop, golf studio and main entrance to its listed Georgian clubhouse.
