AREA GUIDE

Woking

The Borough of Woking is a local government district located 25 miles south west of Central London in the centre of Surrey. Woking railway station is where several main lines converge; trains arrive on different lines from Basingstoke, Aldershot and Portsmouth, all heading to London Waterloo. This has made Woking very popular with those who commute into London because of the high frequency of trains - up to 15 per hour with the quickest taking just 24 minutes.

The Communities

Woking

In recent years, the town of Woking itself has seen significant investment and has taken on a brighter, more contemporary look as regeneration takes effect.  Shopping areas have been expanded, upgraded and reconnected and there are several public art installations in the town centre. Jubilee Square, with a European café culture ambience and elegant planting has been unveiled to great acclaim.

Woking has 8th century origins but really developed with the arrival of the Basingstoke Canal in the 18th century and the railway in the early 19th century.  Both continue to benefit the town as the canal now boasts scenic stretches of cycle routes and walking towpaths along with boating and fishing spots, including Byfleet Boat club.

The Surrey Hills Villages

Pyrford

A village to the east of the Borough, close to the River Wey and favoured for both its golf course and close proximity to the rail station in nearby West Byfleet. The Anchor pub is a popular location for those visiting the area and the nearby Pyrford Marina is a great place to see a collection of narrow boats using the waterways nearby.

West Byfleet

This Surrey village has prospered over the years from the arrival of a main line train station and today the station continues to be a major draw for people moving into the area. It defines West Byfleet as a popular commuter village, with typically 4 trains leaving per hour into Central London.

Byfleet

Served by Byfleet and New Haw railway station, the village of Byfleet is located to the far east of the Borough of Woking.  Byfleet grew substantially because of its close proximity to Brooklands when aircraft manufacturing was at its height during WWI.  Byfleet was on the route for the Olympic Cycle Race in the 2012 Olympics and to this day sees the annual charity race Prudential Ride London pass through the village.
