Having moved into a new flat at the end of 2018, it’s brand new, crisp white walls and sleek white kitchen cabinets won me over instantly. It looked so shiny and new, I couldn’t resist.
Yet as the weeks have moved on I’ve started to add a personal touch to make it more homely – soft furnishings such as rugs, colourful scatter cushions, quirky lampshades and lots eclectic art (I love my art).
The mix of ultra modern and more personal items is a fine balance and one that works for me, but if you are looking to reinvigorate your home in the New Year you’ll need to take note of some of our favourite trends and what our interior design experts say will be hot in 2019!
Searches for dark colours such as black and navy, particularly in the kitchen, have increased by 93% according to Livingetc Magazine, meaning they have now surpassed grey as the must-have colours for walls, cabinetry and even floors. Whether you go full on with dark painted walls, make a feature wall with dark wallpaper or simply add touches to a room with accents and soft furnishings, the effect will be one of instant elegance.
Making that first sweep of the brush can be daunting and does take courage, yet if you are brave enough to give it a go, the rewards are unequaled.
Getting the lighting just right is key to creating the perfect mood when using black or navy, no matter which room you’re decorating. You want to avoid making it seem too cold so make sure you invest in the right bulbs and you’ll wonder why you didn’t open the black paint pot before.
