Templemere is an exceptional example of a number of housing estates completed by Span Development Limited, designed by acclaimed architect Eric Lyons. Built in 1963 as part of the British Modern Movement in architecture it was awarded a coveted Civic Trust award the following year for ‘making an outstanding contribution to the local scene’. Templemere achieved Conservation Area Status in 2017 because of its special architectural and historic interest. Landscaping was expertly envisioned and implemented by Preben Jacobsen who at the time with Lyons was moving landscaping out of a rigid Victorian phase into something more fluid and open with vistas to specific trees all scaled proportionately.
